Over 600 Years of History
Known locally as the most iconic house in Saffron Walden, this property is steeped in history and it is not even known for sure exactly when it was was built, but we know for sure it was around the 1400's

Listed above in 2020, this was the first time in over 100 years that the property had come to market. Owned for over 100 years by the local art gallery, Fry's, it had a sitting tenant residing for over 60 years. When that tenant passed away in 2019 it was put up for sale and purchased immeadiatly by the gentleman that we purchased from. He owned it for less than two years and due to unforeseen circumstances had to put the property up for sale.

The above picture was taken in 1925. At some point this property had been converted into a commercial unit and occupied by a local saddle maker. In the 'Birds of Paradise Room' under the bed, you will find two leather patches crafted onto the floor. It is believed that these were fitted to cover holes that were allowing pests in. It is features like these that help to tell the long and featured story of the life of this house and they have all been preserved for the benefit of us, you and the generations to come

Taper burn marks are deep flame shaped scorch marks often found on the timber beams of early modern houses. They were originally thought to have been accidental, but research suggests that most marks may have been made deliberately, as there is clear patterning of the activity. They are theorised to have been made as part of a folk superstition, then thought to protect the building from fire and lightning.
They are often found around entrances to the home such as fireplaces, doors and windows.
Over 80 such marks have been discovered in the Tower of London and we have at least two right here. See if you can spot them on your stay
We couldn't believe our luck when we found three paintings stored extremely deeply in a nook of the loft that could not have been accessed in many, many years. We believe they were stored deep due to the risque nature of the third painting not shown here. These paintings will be on display in the adult bedrooms
